From a quick trip around the block to a longer weekend outing, a simple routine helps you leave the house prepared. You do not need a bag full of accessories: choose a few items that suit your dog and the walk ahead.
Start with fit, not appearance
A harness should sit securely without restricting normal movement. Check the maker’s measurements rather than choosing by breed alone, and reassess the fit as your dog grows or changes shape. Dogs Trust recommends introducing a new harness gradually and checking the harness, collar and lead for wear. Read its harness fitting and training guide.
Choose a lead for your surroundings
Think about where you will walk and how much control you need. Check the lead’s size and weight guidance, its clip and the manufacturer’s instructions before use. Practise attaching and removing it somewhere calm before heading outside.
Keep your walking kit simple
- A suitable harness and lead in good condition.
- Waste bags, with a spare roll.
- Water and a portable bowl for longer outings.
- A small towel for muddy paws.
- Weather-appropriate clothing if your dog needs it.
Make a quick check before you leave
Look at the route and weather, inspect clips and straps, and allow time for your dog to explore at a comfortable pace. After the walk, let wet equipment dry and check it before putting it away.
